Disable Windows Insider Program Settings in Windows 10

Microsoft originally launched Windows Insider for enterprise testers and the “technically able” to test out new developer features and to gather feedback to improve the features built into Windows 10. The Windows Insider Program is an optional service provided by Microsoft to let users experience the next version of Windows before public release. The program is aimed at early adopters and the ‘enthusiast’ crowd who enjoy the beta testing new software. Besides just using the software, Microsoft encourages testers to send feedback on their experience through a specialized app, which includes ratings and a place to leave notes to the Windows development team. Windows 10 allows users to Join Windows Insider Program using Windows settings. You can find the Windows Insider Program Settings under Update & Security > Windows Insider Program. If you are a normal windows user and don’t want frequent windows updates from the insider Program then you can disable this option. This article will guide you to Disable Windows Insider Program Settings.

Disable Windows Insider Program Settings:

The Main Problem of the Windows Insider Program is that the Program releases updates and builds in a very short interval and this may affect your system performance. Your PC might get slow, and it may not suit for everyone. So this article will guide you to disable Windows Insider Program in two different methods.

Using Local Group Policy Editor:

Open Run command by Pressing Windows + R and type gpedit.msc and hit enter. This will open Group Policy Editor.

Now navigate to the following path.

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Component > Windows Update > Windows Update for Business

From the Left-hand side click on the Windows Update for Business and from the right-hand side look for Manage Preview Builds.

Double Click on Manage Preview Builds and open Policy Settings. Click on Enabled and under set the behavior for receiving Preview builds, click on the Dropdown menu and choose Disable Preview Builds.

Click On Apply and OK.

Using Registry Editor:

If you are a Windows 10 Home user, then you might not be able to find Group Policy Editor. In such case, you can use Registry Editor to Disable Windows Insider Program settings.

Note: Modifying the Registry is risky, and it causes irreversible damage to your OS Installation Follow the steps correctly. Friendly advice Before Modifying Registry Creating Restore Point is recommended.

Open Run command by pressing Windows + R and type Regedit and hit enter. This will open Registry Editor.

Now Navigate to the following path.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate

From the Left hand side click on the WindowsUpdate Registry key and from the right hand side look for the ManagePreviewBuildsPolicyValue DWORD.

If you are not able to find the DWORD, you need to create an new DWORD value, Right click on empty are and choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. And name the DWORD as ManagePreviewBuildsPolicyValue.

Now Double click on the DWORD and set the Value 2 and hit OK.

Disable Windows Insider Program

Then again create a new DWORD value and name it as BranchReadinessLevel. Double click on the DWORD and modify the value.

In the dialog box, you can set the Value data as following:

  • 2 = Receive Dev channel builds.
  • 4 = Receive Beta channel builds.
  • 8 = Receive Release Preview builds.

Click Ok and Restart the system once.
